At the end of 2023 my friend’s TV (LG OLED 65" CXPUA) was having problems turning off unexpectedly after some period of time and it was out of warranty for repair/replacement. They asked me to take a look at the TV to see if I could fix it and I spent quite some time troubleshooting the problem to identify whether it was a software or hardware malfunction. All reports from the owner stated the TV was well handled and did not experience any environmental changes beyond normal operation and the timing of the TV automatically shutting down seemed like it could be a sleep or power saving mode fault. The TV was confirmed to work for an extended period of time before shutting down, sometimes as short as two hours and other times as long as 40 hours before turning off unexpectedly. After experiencing an unexpected power off event, the TV would not operate very long before shutting down again if used directly after the unexpected power off event - e.g., less than 30 minutes.

After extensive diagnostic work, configuring settings, and operating the TV for multiple 40+ hour sessions before turning off unexpectedly, I did further research into the problem and found this
Reddit thread. In the thread some users mentioned cooling issues which sounded exactly like what the TV was experiencing and the repair seemed easy if the rear panel comes off without a problem. Having ruled out all other issues during testing and settings configurations, I decided to cut a hole and install a fan to the rear panel that would turn on with the TV using the USB port. A Noctua 120mm Fan was chosen and aimed directly at the motherboard chip that was suspected of overheating. After repairing the TV with the rear panel fan fix, the TV worked successfully for the first 60+ hour session, and no longer shutdown unexpectedly.

It’s been almost 2 years and the TV has not turned off unexpectedly since installing the fan to the rear panel.
